HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO CONTINUE READING DURING THE HOLIDAY
The school holidays might seem like the perfect time for children to take a break from learning and all the hard work they do at school. But here at Kumon, we also think it’s a great time to spark a love for reading and build an enjoyment of books. Reading is the perfect activity—it’s fun, can be done almost anywhere, and there are countless books to explore!
No matter what your child’s age is, here are a few ideas to encourage them to keep on reading and learning:
1. Pack books if you’re going on holiday
Bringing something to read on holiday, in the car or while waiting at events is a great way to encourage your child to read in their spare time. You could pack books or even magazines on topics that interest them—the key is to offer material they’ll genuinely enjoy!
2. Use a reading log to track finished books
Keeping a record of the books they’ve read helps children see their progress and encourages them to keep going—even beyond the holiday months! Your child could design his or her own chart or journal pages to track what the reading progress or even what your whole family has read together before the school term starts. Include short reviews and star ratings for each book to reflect on what you liked. You can also encourage your child to try books from different genres, helping them explore new topics and step outside their comfort zone.
3. Participate in a reading challenge
While a reading log is great, taking part in a reading challenge can provide an extra motivational boost (and maybe even some fun rewards!). Check if your local library is running a challenge—as there are many offer prizes or recognition for participants.
4. Set up or join a book club
Book clubs aren’t just for adults! You can create a children’s book club with your child’s friends or join an existing one in your local community or library. Book clubs give children the chance to discuss what they’re reading, deepen their understanding of the story and share different perspectives—all of which can boost their enthusiasm for reading.
Regardless of your child’s age, reading is a fantastic activity that supports learning and development in a fun and engaging way. The Kumon English Programme is designed to nurture a lifelong love of reading and learning—perfect for children at any ability level looking to grow during the school break and beyond.
